The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Pied Piper

an opera by
Seymour Barab

The story of the Pied Piper is a familiar one told by many, such as the Grimm Brothers and Robert Browning in his famous poem.  Although originally a very dark account as described by the Grimm Brothers, the tale is actually based on a true event purported to have taken place in Hamelin, Germany in 1284.

In Mr. Barab’s version, the worth of a promise is highlighted with the obvious repercussions arising from failure to adhere to a promise.

As always in Augusta Opera Outreach productions, children at the place of performance will be used in the show.  This year they will portray the Rats and the Children who are enticed by the Piper’s song.  As the Children, they will be taught a song to sing by Augusta Opera’s own April Wilson, veteran of our 2006-2007 run of Alice In Wonderland.  This class will be available to the music teacher prior to the arrival of the operatic troupe.  If you desire to see the music ahead of time, the 2 lead sheets are available as pdf files here:  PDF1   PDF2

Our cast this year includes a couple of newcomers to the Augusta Opera.  Richard Repp portrays the Piper and Krista Wilhelmsen does double duty as the Woodland Nymph and the Mayor of Hamelin. April Wilson sings the role of the Town Clerk.  Once again directed by Augusta Opera Production Coordinator, Kitty Reagan, the opera features Stacy Reynolds at the keyboard.
